Time and again, reports about number of hours that employees waste on personal communication from a company resources or zillions fo dollars are lost due to web addition, make the rounds.

But young professionals claim that multitasking, in terms of handling official and personal communication, all at the same time is the way ahead. Most networking sites do not damage productivity enhancers. For instance, the ability to broadcast a one-to-many message instantly through a single status update (either on the PC or on the mobile phone) saves the user the effort of sending that message to his list of contacts, especially professional contacts, one by one. Today’s generation likes to stay connected. If used in moderation, social platforms give users options to decide how and where to receive updates.

HR experts say that employees need to exercise more responsibility at workplace. “Organisations need to instill net etiquette in their induction programs and maintain that social networking during office hours is unacceptable.” Adding “Cell phones are necessary evils, but they should be used only sparingly during work hours. Loud ringtones and long personal calls hamper one’s productivity and are absolutely unacceptable.”

It is far from hampering productivity, personal conversations  – be it on a cell phone, instant chat message or social networking – help employees distress. “Surfing the web every now and then provides the professional a break from the grueling tad at hand and allows him/her to approach the work with refreshed mind once again.”

Interestingly most often employers themselves equip employees with the latest communication technology to make them more efficient. ” Gone are the days of the desktop PC.
